(this is a true event)

Imagine you haven’t been skiing for two years and suddenly during February break you are plopped on skis and have to go skiing in B.C. with your family, friends and lots of people you do not know very well. I was only seven and I felt excited, for the time being…

As I was walking with my skis to the chalet I could smell the pine trees and it was almost like I could see the waves of excitement coming off of people. This was really happening. But deep down inside I kind of felt nervous. What if I hit a tree! I had heard of people getting seriously injured or dying from inexperienced skiing. But I swallowed my fear and got on the chair-lift with my dad.

As I was going up, my dad said, “Now Sophia this is an old lift that does not slow down. You’ll be okay? Right?” “Yes dad.” I said but inside I was like no I can’t! When we got to the top my dad raised the bar and got off. I tried but my legs were to short! The lift swung around and I yelled “dad!” Luckily there was a tripwire that stopped the lift from carrying me over the edge. I got off panting like I had run a marathon. Me and my dad embraced, then we skied off into the misty horizon…

(retold by Calla)

The beautiful bright blue sky filled my eyes, the huge golden sun slid into view. All of it amazed me. All until my dad yelled “Sophia get your skis on!” I put on my shoulder height skis and headed to the chair lift. As I went up my dad said “This is a old lift and it doesn’t slow down, so be careful.” When we had gotten to the top was super careful but my dad not so much. He fell and face planted three-feet deep in the snow. Since I didn’t know how to get off because it was my first time I never got off, I just kept going around and around and around.

Meanwhile, my mom and sister were on the bunny hill and decided to go in for lunch. My mom ordered a beef sandwich even though she’s vegetarian! It was a weird day that day. Finally my dad had gotten out of the three foot hole and he was forced to ski down the hill. As soon as he got to the bottom my dad waited and waited and waited, until I came around on the chair lift. Then he grabbed me out of my seat as fast as lightning and we skied off to the lodge to join my mom and sister for lunch. After a good lunch we had decided to drive home and that was the end of skiing. That night I felt like I was spinning round and round and round… That was when I decided I would not go skiing with my dad again.

February break reading log

The book that I read was Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. The genre that I chose was adventure. The reason I chose adventure was because practically the whole story is an adventure. They have to cross mountains, battle orcs, (goblins basically but much more mean) and tackle whatever is thrown in there path. They also are split up in the middle of the story and they don’t know who is where and what they are getting themselves into.

The theme that I chose was “be careful who you trust.” I chose that because when the characters are split up one group of two meets Gollum, a mysterious figure that has two personalities! He seems to be helping the two hobbits. But I have a sneaking suspicion that he is going to turn on them and bring them to the enemy, Sauron. That was my summery of Lord of the Rings.

Reflection piece on themes and genres

The book that I read was “Dead is so last year.” The theme is suspense. The reason why it is suspense is because it holds you on the edge of your seat. Just like when during the book the main character and her friend are trapped by the bad guys you wonder what will happen and how they can be saved. Also in the book there are doubles of people and it is hard to tell who is the right person and if you should trust them or not.

The genre is fantasy. The reason it is fantasy is because the story could not be real. Although it is a normal looking town there is unreal things on the town. There are vampires, werewolves, people who have psychic powers, people who can communicate telepathically and witches. It is a half normal town and a half magical town. That is why the genre is fantasy.

My dream vacation

Posted by sophiasask | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on January 12, 2016

Have you ever been to Mexico? That is my dream vacation. Since I live in a cold climate it would be wonderfully relaxing to get away from all of the snow and cold temperatures and just stick my feet in the hot, grainy sand.

I have been to Mexico once but I was a baby and I don’t remember anything at all. I was about, nine months old and just standing up in the crib so I couldn’t do as much. Now I could go swimming, sun tan on the beaches, collect pretty shells and go on tours and walks! Also I would be with my younger sister! The best time to go would be during winter for that is when it is coldest in my country.

To conclude this brief piece on the most wonderful Mexico I personally hope that perhaps I could go someday to that beautiful place in the world. There are many places in the world and I think that Mexico is one of the best. What is your dream vacation? Please comment below and provide me with your answer.

What I want to get invented this year in 2016!!!

Posted by sophiasask | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on January 11, 2016

Throughout our history we have had many “Eureakas!” (a sudden idea or invention) I hope that we will have some or one “Eureka” this year during 2016. That is why I have chosen to tell you about what I wish and hope will happen this year in the invention area! Most ideas will be far fetched and will probably not happen (maybe in a million years) but some could happen! You never knnoowwwww…

My first and foremost idea is a massaging backpack. I personally think this is the best idea out of all of my crazy thoughts. You want to know why? I’ll tell you why! Just imagine, your hiking, your back is aching and wallah! You press a button and the backpack turns on its massagers. There is a settings button which you can change it to a light gentle rub, a normal push on your muscles or a furious pounding on your shoulders and back. It would be glorious!!!

My secondary idea is a lunch-bag that gives you whatever food you want. You want ice cream? It will give it to you. You want some chilli? It’s got that as well. But there is a catch, you must be polite or the lunch-bag will give you hot chilli flakes in your taco salad. If you are a polite person than this product (if it ever gets invented) would be good for you. I don’t think this will ever happen because you practically need magic to do it and we don’t have access to magic.

My last idea is a weightless backpack. This would be awesome for students in older grades at school who have a lot of homework. You could stuff anything you want in that could fit in that backpack and you wouldn’t even know it was on your back! Also it would be great for running home to beat your sister to the biggest cookie in the cookie jar. She would be weighted down by her heavy lunch and homework, while you would be running freely towards your house.

After taking you through this wonderful inventive dream, I still have many other ideas of inventions. I only chose my favourite ones even though they aren’t very realistic. You should also think of some ideas. Perhaps even try to create your idea. If you have any ideas, please comment and mention them. Your contribution is greatly appreciated!
